Lyon Cohen Symposium

Congregation Beth Israel is the privileged recipient of The Lyon Cohen Fund for Jewish Business Ethics.  The Fund, established by Marcie and Bob Zlotnik, honors Marcie’s father and prior Congregation member Lyon Cohen, who passed away in 2003.  Lyon battled a rare cancer for many years, but he was a man of great optimism and inspiration.  He loved life, and he found great meaning and support in Judaism.

The Fund has created the Lyon Cohen Scholarship, a $5000 annual scholarship available to any Congregation Beth Israel member or family member who will be a junior or senior undergraduate student or a graduate student at any college or university in the fall of 2019.  The Scholarship is presented to that applicant who best exemplifies Lyon Cohen’s optimism, devotion to Judaism, and ethical grounding.  The scholarship, increased this year to $5000, is in its fourth year.  Past recipients of the Lyon Cohen Scholarship are Ian Falik, Dr. Kevin Kotamarti, and Danielle Golub.

In further tribute to Lyon, the Fund supports The Lyon Cohen Symposium on Business Ethics, which was successfully launched in 2015 and which has grown each year.  The 2018 Symposium addressing Ethics in Journalism drew over 300 participants. The Symposium and the community response reflect Lyon’s impeccable ethics and his Judaic values.

Congregation Beth Israel is delighted to highlight the Lyon Cohen Scholarship for its membership and encourages all eligible students to apply.  Applications are now available online here.  Questions can be addressed to Dani Gardner, (713) 771-6221 x630.

The Hurricane Harvey Flood Fund

Hurricane Harvey left Houston and surrounding areas in a shambles, but the great people of Houston are banding together to help and heal. Your help is welcome and needed. You may send Gift Cards (Kroger, Target, HEB, Lowe’s, or Visa/Mastercard, etc.) to Congregation Beth Israel. They will be immediately distributed to area neighbors to assist in replacing essential items and children’s school supplies.

You may also Donate directly to Congregation Beth Israel by clicking here. All funds will go directly to aid those who need immediate help. These funds will NOT be held to be allocated later. On behalf of our clergy (Rabbi David Lyon, Rabbi Adrienne Scott, Rabbi Joshua Herman, Rabbi Chase Foster, and Cantor Trompeter), David Scott, Executive Director, and Bruce Levy, Temple President, we are very grateful for your kindness, generosity, and help.

Hurt has no shame and no label; we just need to heal one another.

Rabbi David Lyon
