Treasures from the Archives:

A recently uncovered letter, circa 1972, thought to be from Shirley Macow, who was Rabbi Schachtel’s secretary at the time. She is stating her case for replacing the outdated system of recording membership, with a new machine called a computer.

Oral Histories

BETH ISRAEL ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

Congregation Beth Israel conducted an Oral History Project in the mid-1970s and 1990s in which Linda May and photographer Gay Block interviewed community members and leaders of Houston Jewish institutions about their memories of life in the community.   These oral histories illuminate a range of views and experiences, from community members and religious leaders.  They provide a glimpse of Jewish life in Houston in an earlier time.  Click on the names and hear community members and leaders tell their stories in their own voices.
