A new Century. . . keeping the Covenant

Our story continues to unfold. . .Congregation Beth Israel

As the 21st Century began to unfold, Beth Israel continued to change. The Temple leadership undertook a major renovation effort to expand and update our beautiful facilities. In 2004, we welcomed Rabbi David A. Lyon as our new Senior Rabbi and celebrated our Sesquicentennial, 150 years as a congregational family.

Beth Israel and its members have played a major role in shaping the history of this city and this community for more than 150 years. Most of Houston’s major Jewish congregations can trace their roots to Beth Israel, Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. Our members have distinguished themselves in business, education, law, politics, and philanthropy. Throughout our history, Beth Israel members have acknowledged and acted upon their kinship for all people and social justice. Whenever there is a need, Beth Israel members respond. From its original 22 members, today we are home to more than 1700 families.

Led by Senior Rabbi David Lyon, Beth Israel remains a testament to its founders, members, clergy, and leaders. It is a legacy that we will continue to build together for generations to come.

L’dor v’dor. From generation to generation.
