On My Way to Israel

On My Way to Israel

From the desk of Rabbi David Lyon

On February 25th, I’ll board a familiar flight to Israel under unfamiliar circumstances. Rather than accompany first-timers to Israel for a life-changing experience, this trip will be mission-driven to bring support, comfort, and hope to Israeli families and friends. I’m joining a trip organized by Houston Jewish Federation, with about 18 Jewish Houstonians. On this trip, we’ll bear witness to the atrocities and scars of October 7th, but also the hopes that must emerge, one day, from the aftermath of it all.

At Congregation Beth Israel, we’re committed to Israel and Jewish education to help us navigate the news with accuracy and responsibility. Our scholars-in-residence, from the U.S. and Israel, in-person and on Zoom, have been among the top voices on Israel and Middle East matters. They bring different points of view, and they’re all worthy of our time and interest. Though I have spoken passionately on Israel from the pulpit and in weekly blogs, my visit to Israel will prepare me best to sharpen my viewpoints and yours.

But I can’t just come home with more to give you! I’m also going to give them what they need from us. Israelis need to know that Americans, and especially warm-hearted Houstonians, are with them in body, mind, and spirit. They love our warm embraces and strong advocacy. They’ll know that you stand with me to support Israel.

When I do return home, on March 1st, I’ll begin to share new observations, experiences, and accounts of life in Israel, today. I’ll respond to your questions and build mutual hopes with you for our Jewish future here and in Israel.

ברוך בצאתכם וברוך בבואכם
Baruch b’tzeitchem u’varuch b’vo’achem
Blessed be our journey there and back, again.

L’Shalom,
