Cantor Gerber retired from Congregation Beth Israel and was elevated to Emeritus status as of the summer of 2011. For the 2011-2012 year Cantor Gerber is serving as Cantor at Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills, Maryland. Although he will be away from Houston for most of the year, he will still be available to correspond with you through his Beth Israel email address. Just click the contact link below. 

Cantor Gerber was Congregation Beth Israel’s first full-time cantor. He served Beth Israel from the time of his graduation from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Sacred Music in 1983, through the summer of 2011. Prior to attending HUC-JIR, Cantor Gerber graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan School of Music. He has performed with opera companies in Israel and Germany and has been a soloist with many prestigious musical ensembles in the United States and abroad including Houston Oratorio Society and the Houston Symphony. Cantor Gerber has been a board member and officer of the American Conference of Cantors, served on various UAHC committees and his communal involvement has included the United Way “Campaign for the Homeless” and the Braes Interfaith Ministries Choir.

In addition to singing for services and officiating at life cycle events; Cantor Gerber directed the Beth Israel B’nai Mitzvah program, taught in Religious School, and directed the Junior Choir. 

Married to Graciela, the Gerbers have three children, Yoni, Dafna, and Aviva.

Hurricane Harvey left Houston and surrounding areas in a shambles, but the great people of Houston are banding together to help and heal. Your help is welcome and needed.
