Departing from the religion of your upbringing and claiming a religious identity different from that of your birth family is one of the greatest soul-searching decisions a person can make. Yet, when you identify so strongly with the beliefs, values and ways of life of a religion, it becomes unbearable not to be identified as one of its members. If Judaism speaks to your heart in such a way, we welcome you and will help you to embrace Judaism as your own.
Whether you have made your decision or are still contemplating if conversion is right for you, know that Beth Israel reaches out to welcome all those who want to learn more about Judaism. We offer a 13-week introduction to Basic Judaism taught each spring and fall. Sessions are led by our Senior Rabbi David Lyon, Assistant Rabbi Adrienne Scott, Cantor Robert Gerber, and Rabbi Todd Doctor, and feature a variety of presentations and discussions on topics such as:
- Foundations of our Faith
- Choosing Judaism
- Understanding Jewish Prayer
- Shaping Sacred Time: Shabbat, Holidays & Festivals
- Living a Jewish Life
- Life Cycle Events
- Reform Judaism
- Jewish Music
- Jewish History and Anti-Semitism
- Israel: The Land and People
We celebrate Shabbat and the holidays together and have Beth Israel members who volunteer to act as mentors for interested participants throughout their conversion process. Check outB.I. Buddies for more information.
Check the calendar for the next session start date. Classes meet at the Temple on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. Registration is $18 and is open to anyone wishing to deepen their level of Jewish knowledge.
