Rabbi Lyon Listed Among the Top Pulpit
Rabbis in America
Mazal Tov to our own Senior Rabbi David Lyon for being named among Newsweek’s top 25 pulpit rabbis in America. According to Newsweek’s Lisa Miller in the April 21 2008 edition, “rabbis named on the list are believed to have what it takes to lead American Jews into the 21st century.”
In a recent interview with Kristina Herrndobler of HoustonBelief.com Rabbi Lyon was quoted as saying, "The recognition is an honor, and I'm delighted to be part of a group of rabbis who share my passion for Jewish life in the congregational setting. About being a rabbi, I have often said that I have had many long days but never a day of regret. Even in the midst of this honor, I am pressed to meet my daily schedule, prepare for a funeral, visit the hospital, teach bar and bat mitzvah students, and respond to the needs of my thriving congregation. My congregants bring out the best in me, and I am strengthened by them - all of them. I'm proud of my colleagues at Beth Israel, too, who share my work ethic and my passion. If the recognition increases my profile in the larger community or on the national scene, then I'd be pleased to serve where I'm needed. I'm not looking for more work; but, I know a mitzvah, a commandment (good deed), when I see it and I do it to the best of my ability.''
