This tradition marks the beginning of a child’s Jewish education and is celebrated by the entire community. It is held on Simchat Torah eve in the fall, the time we celebrate the reading of the Torah from its beginning each year. Usually in kindergarten, the children are called to the bimah for a special blessing and instructions from the rabbi. Each receives his or her own small Torah to mark the beginning of their formal Jewish education.
