FROM THE RABBI...

Every morning for the past month, I’ve made it my routine to visit the sanctuary. Every day during the week, skilled workmen have been fulfilling plans to renovate our sacred space after devastating floods. This week, I entered the sanctuary to see some very special improvements and changes that will be revealed next week on Shabbat, January 20th. Here’s a list of highlights:

 

  • The tall bimah will appear lower and closer to the congregation. The height of the Holy Ark hasn’t changed, but the first step to ascend the bimah is closer to the congregation because the lower bimah has been extended towards the congregation by permanently removing two rows of seats. 
  • A permanent and integrated ramp has been added to the left side of the bimah. This addition will enable everyone to ascend the lower bimah with ease and dignity. A chair lift will still enable those who need it to ascend to the upper bimah.

HAPPENING THIS WEEK

RABBI DENISE EGER, SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE
Rabbi Eger, President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis will be our Scholar-in-Residence on January 27 and 28. Friday evening will include a Shabbat dinner and Saturday morning will include brunch and a special learning session. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
Temple Offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
 
A NEW SANCTUARY IS REVEALED, JANUARY 20TH
On January 20, 2017, Down Home Shabbat, a special musical and new member service, we will reveal our brand new Sanctuary space.

SISTERHOOD NEWS
"5 Things Every Woman Needs to Know" with Dr. Richard Murray, political science professor at the University of Houston and on-air political election analyst. Dr. Murray will speak about what we can expect of post-election Congress on issues of particular interest to women and families. The evening begins at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, with wine & cheese. The program is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Ladin Dining Room. RSVP to sisterhood@beth-israel.org.

BACH AND THE PSALMS
Cantor Daniel Mutlu will be the featured Tenor soloist as the Houston Bach Society presents an evening of Bach's early cantatas based on psalm texts. The concert will be presented at Beth Israel, 6:00 p.m., Sunday, January 22. Visit www.bachsocietyhouston.org for more information.

MAH JONGG GIRLS' NIGHT OUT
Join us 6:00-10:00 p.m. in Wolff-Toomim Hall, Thursday, January 26. Players of all levels are welcome. Make your own table with your friends or come meet some new friends with whom to play. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP TO BEGIN
ON JANUARY 31, 2017
The "W.A.Y.S." (With AllYour Soul) Committee of Congregation Beth Israel will offer a Bereavement Support Group beginning January 31st and every Tuesday for six weeksfrom 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Beth Israel, and continue for six weeks. This group will be led by Judith Katzman, M.A., L.M.F.T., a licensed psychotherapist, will lead the group.
