Cantor Daniel Mutlu joins the senior clergy as only the second full time Cantor in the congregation’s 157-year history. Cantor Mutlu received a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 2001. He also earned a Masters in Sacred Music from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City and was invested into the Cantorate in 2008. Previous to his Cantorial studies Cantor Mutlu trained students in vocal and harmony studies both privately and as a tutor at the New England Conservatory. After investiture into the Cantorate in 2008, Cantor Mutlu was called to serve Community Synagogue of Rye, New York where he served for three years. In Rye Cantor Mutlu established an instrumental ensemble, which led monthly musical services with children’s and adult choirs. During his time in New York, Cantor Mutlu also served as Professor of Traditional Nusach at Hebrew Union College. An avid composer and arranger, Cantor Mutlu has also premiered original works in Boston, Jerusalem and New York.

Cantor Mutlu has sung with a number of premier musical organizations and houses of worship, most notably with the Trinity Choir Wall Street where he received two glowing musical reviews from the New York Times for solo performances as Jephte in Carissimi’s Jephte and as a tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah. He has worked as a soloist with renowned conductors such as Jane Glover, Andrew Megill, Simon Carington and Owen Burdick. He also has sung with the Park East Synagogue choir under the direction of Azi Schwartz, Mordechai Sobol and Matthew Lazar both at Sabbath services and concerts at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House.

Cantor Mutlu may be heard on the recently released Naxos eight-disc set of The Complete Haydn Masses. He is featured in the recording as a tenor soloist with the Trinity Choir and Rebel Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Owen Burdick and Jane Glover.

Cantor Mutlu, his wife, Nina, and son, Saya are excited to become a part of the Beth Israel family.
